HAGERSTOWN – A meticulously restored 1939 soap box derby car will be unveiled at a special event on Saturday, March 1, the Washington County Historical Society. The event will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Miller House Museum.
The derby car was originally crafted by Hagerstown resident Lewis Spessard in 1939. Spessard competed with the car in the local Soap Box Derby, sponsored by the Herald Mail and Elks Lodge and later participated in the prestigious All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, in August of the same year.
The unveiling will feature Ed Mentzer, the skilled restorer of the derby car, who will share insights into the restoration process and the car’s rich history. Guests can enjoy light refreshments, and doors will open at 12:30 PM. While the event is free, attendees are encouraged to RSVP or secure tickets in advance to ensure seating at 301-797-8782.
The restoration of this historic derby car was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Jerry Spessard, a relative of Lewis Spessard. This event not only celebrates the preservation of local history but also honors the legacy of those who contributed to it. The historical society continues to play a vital role in preserving and sharing the stories of Washington County’s past through engaging events and exhibits.
