WAYNESBORO – Additional work on the Borough of Waynesboro revitalization effort on Walnut Street is being completed.
The project started last summer, when Victorian style street lights – nearly identical to those on Main Street and Clayton Avenue – were installed on both sides of Walnut Street between Second and Third streets.
Owners of the properties along the same section of the street are installing new curbs and sidewalks “because they were in a condition that didn’t meet the requirements for the sidewalk ordinance,” according to Kevin Grubbs, director of engineering for the Borough of Waynesboro. “We want them in good condition before we rebuild the street,” he added. The borough has contracted RECON of York for the street work at a cost of $232,000 funded by a share of the state’s gasoline taxes. “They’re in the borough working on three other streets and will be back in July to do Walnut,” Grubbs said.
Contractors also are completing road crossing work on the power source at the pole underground from the east to the west side of Walnut Street at Second Street.

The project is helping to fulfill a vision that will connect the Boro Plaza on Walnut Street and downtown Waynesboro. The Plaza, anchored by WBO Health & Fitness and home to a variety of businesses, “is a very viable and busy area, and we’re doing everything we can to make the area look a lot more presentable,” noted Grubbs.
The $217,762 lighting project was funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED), the Commonwealth Financing Authority and a Multimodal Transportation grant.
