Volleyball, football stars highlight Shepherd’s regional honors in sports wrap

UNION BRIDGE, Md. – South Hagerstown got out of the starting gate slowly on Friday in a 56-17 loss to Francis Scott Key in opening game of the girls basketball season. 

Aniyah Freeman topped the Rebels (0-1) with eight points while Kylie Terralonge added six. 

It was South’s first game for new head coach Kevin Meredith.

Pitt-Johnstown ousts Shepherd from NCAA tournament 

ERIE, Pa.Outside hitter Amya Davis and hitter Sophia Ryan each had eight kills and three digs as Shepherd University dropped a 25-18, 25-23, 25-21 decision on Thursday in the Atlantic Regional quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II tournament at Gannon University. 

Outside hitter Ada McCoy and freshman right side hitter Emily Ryder, a Smithsburg graduate, had five kills for the Rams (19-11). McCoy added four digs.  

Setter Macy Buso recorded 24 assists, four kills, four digs, and an ace. Libero Kiela Sanger had a team-high 12 digs, while Madigan Faircloth contributed six digs and three assists.  

Ryan Earns D2CCA All-Atlantic Region Honors 

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Shepherd middle hitter/middle blocker Sophia Ryan been named to the 2025 D2CCA All-Atlantic Region Volleyball Team’s second team for the second consecutive season. 

The team was selected by the region’s sports information directors.   

Ryan boasts a .371 attack percentage that leads the PSAC and ranks her 23rd nationally. She has 264 kills, a team-best 134 blocks, 37 digs, and 12 aces. Ryan’s 1.20 blocks per set average ranks her fourth in the PSAC and 23rd nationally. 

WOMEN’S SOCCER 

Odell Resigns as Shepherd’s women’s soccer coach 

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Sam Odell has resigned as Shepherd University’s women’s soccer coach to accept a job at University of South Carolina-Upstate. 

Odell has compiled a 49-28-22 mark in six years as the head coach of the Shepherd women’s soccer program. He led the Rams to a 30-4-10 mark over the past two seasons. The Rams won a pair of PSAC titles, made a pair of regional appearances, and were Atlantic Region champions in 2024. 

“I would like to thank Sam for his commitment and his hard work,” said Shepherd athletic director Carrie Bodkins. “We have witnessed a complete turnaround – back-to-back PSAC Championships, an Atlantic Region title, and two consecutive NCAA regional appearances. We are grateful for all that he has contributed here at Shepherd. I have no doubt that he will continue to succeed and make a difference wherever he goes.” 

Shepherd will conduct a national search to find Odell’s replacement. 

COLLEGE FOOTBALL 

Shepherd Trio Earns D2CCA All-Super Region One Honors 

EDINBORO, Pa. – Shepherd University’s Klayton Batten was recognized twice as the Rams placed three players on the 2025 D2CCA All-Super Region One Team. 

The team is selected by the region’s sports information directors. 

Batten, a senior, was named to the first-team defense as a safety and selected to the second team as a kick return specialist. 

He recorded 42 tackles (30 solos) with 1.5 tackles-for-loss. He added five interceptions, four pass breakups, four forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. His 0.45 interceptions per game tied for the PSAC lead and ranked him seventh nationally.  

He had 17 punt returns for an 11.35 average. He had a 74-yard punt return for a score against West Chester. Batten currently ranks 13th nationally in punt returns. 

Punter Daishaun Alexander joined Batten on the first-team. He averaged 44.57 yards in 44 kicks, with 16 punts placed inside the 20-yard line. He collected for 13 punts of 50 yards or more. His average leads the PSAC and ranks him third nationally. 

Lineman Brandon Carr was selected to the second-team offense after anchoring a Shepherd line that paved the way for Jordan Barnett to rush for 1,209 yards and 17 touchdowns. The Rams average 168.73 rushing yards and 30.5 points per game. 

Shippensburg had one representative to the team. Linebacker Nate Myers was selected to the second-team defense. 

MEN’S BASKETBALL 

Virginia Union 68, Shepherd 49 

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Guard Brody Davis paced Shepherd University with a game-high 19 points on Wednesday, but the Rams sputtered in a loss to Virginia Union.  

Davis connected 7-of-10 field goals with a 5-of-7 effort from three-point range for the Rams (3-3). 

Virginia Union had a 32-25 advantage at the break. The Panthers opened the second half on a 14-5 run to take a 16-point lead at 46-30 to take control of the contest. 

Guards Elwyne Wordlaw and Colby White each added eight points. White also handed out a game-high seven assists. Forward Favor Okigweh grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
