HAGERSTOWN – As the number of viral illness cases begins to tick up in the region, Meritus Health officials are reminding the public to take precautions to prevent getting sick or spreading germs to vulnerable populations.
“As we enter fall and winter, protecting against viral illnesses – especially the new COVID variant, Stratus – requires vigilance and layered strategies,” said Anand Budi, M.D., Meritus chief medical officer.
The strongest defense against COVID and other viral illnesses such as the flu is vaccination, especially for older adults, those with weakened immune systems and other vulnerable groups.
But with Labor Day gatherings happening this weekend, there are more immediate ways to keep germs from spreading.
That includes consistent and frequent handwashing and using hand sanitizer to reduce transmission from surfaces.
“Use hand sanitizer, winter’s signature fragrance,” Dr. Budi said.
Another solution is simply taking care of yourself.
“Strengthening immunity through adequate sleep, balanced nutrition and regular physical activity is equally important,” Dr. Budi said.
Wearing masks in crowded indoor settings and ensuring good ventilation can help lower exposure risk.
“A mask today keeps the flu away,” he said.
Related to that, staying home when sick prevents spread within the community.
“Sharing is caring, except when it’s germs,” Dr. Budi said. “If you are sick, and you can treat your symptoms with over-the-counter medicines, fluids and rest, don’t go to the doctor or urgent care or emergency department. You run the risk of spreading it to others.”
