The Institute to Offer Four-Part Workshop

WAYNESBORO– The Institute presents a Nature Journaling Workshop on four consecutive Wednesdays, June 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 10 a.m. to noon, at Pine Hill Recreation Area near Waynesboro, Pa. Open to those age 15 and up.

Led by Institute educator Jan Barrasso, the workshop provides an opportunity to explore the park with an eye to experiencing, observing and recording many aspects of the natural world found there.

“There is an incredible world of plants, trees and birds living at our area parks,” Barrasso said. “We will sit quietly and reflect on nature’s beauty, and also walk through the landscape, observing details of its natural life.”

A goal of nature journaling is to hone observation skills, gaining insight about nature while noting details such as patterns, colors, shapes and designs that tell the stories of the flora and fauna in our region, Barrasso said.

“There are many different ways to create a nature journal, including sketching or drawing, written descriptions, or creating stories based on what one sees, hears and experiences while sitting or walking outside,” she said. “Each person will discover their own way to observe and record the wonders of nature.”

Barrasso holds a master’s degree in education with a dual certification in art and

elementary education. She taught in the classroom for 32 years, and has experience leading nature journaling programs.

Each session begins with a short introduction. Attendees should bring their own materials: a paper tablet or notebook, with pen, pencil, colored pencils, or markers. A bottle of water is also advised.

The workshop is limited to 10 participants. Registration for the workshop is required by June 6, and includes all four sessions. Workshop fee: $45 for Institute member; $50 general public. Register online at www.natureandcultureinstitute.org.
