WAYNESBORO – The pollinator and wildlife group at the Church of the Apostles, United Church of Christ, is offering free young milkweed and fennel plants to the community in an effort to support local butterfly populations. The plants are available at the church, 336 Barnett Ave., until May 15.
Milkweed serves as the host plant for the monarch butterfly, while fennel is one of the host plants for the black swallowtail butterfly. Both species are vital pollinators, and their populations have faced significant declines in recent years due to habitat loss and other environmental pressures.
The initiative aims to encourage residents to create butterfly-friendly habitats in their own gardens, helping to sustain these important insects. Interested individuals can contact Bob Benchoff at 717-377-4729 or by email at [email protected] for more information or to arrange a pickup.
The pollinator and wildlife group hopes that by distributing these plants, more people will become involved in conservation efforts and help ensure a healthy environment for future generations.
