Student art takes the wheel in Antrim Township’s ‘Paint the Plow’ project

ANTRIM – Antrim Township is proud to announce the launch of its Paint the Plow project, a winter safety and public awareness initiative designed to promote safe driving during snow and ice events while highlighting student creativity and community collaboration.

Modeled after PennDOT’s Paint the Plow program, the project transforms a township snowplow into a highly visible piece of student artwork that reinforces winter driving safety messages. The plow will be on public display in front of the Greencastle-Antrim High School through January 1, allowing residents and visitors the opportunity to view the artwork up close.

The Paint the Plow project is a partnership between the Antrim Township Board of Supervisors, administration and road department, and the Greencastle-Antrim School District School Board, administration and the Greencastle-Antrim High School Art Club, under the direction of Art Club Adviser Alex Miller.

As part of the project, Art Club students were invited to submit original design concepts. After reviewing multiple submissions, the Antrim Township Board of Supervisors selected the winning design, submitted by Rebecca Shatzer, a ninth grade student at Greencastle-Antrim High School.

“This project is a great example of what can happen when local government and our school district work together with a shared goal,” said Chris Ardinger, Antrim Township administrator. “Our road crews perform critical work during winter weather, and this initiative helps raise awareness about winter driving safety while giving students a meaningful way to contribute to the community.”

Township Supervisor Chairman Pat Heraty added, “This is a simple but impactful way to promote safety while supporting our students and strengthening community partnerships.

Dr. Lura Hanks, superintendent of the Greencastle-Antrim School District, emphasized the educational value of the project. “Paint the Plow is a meaningful, real-world opportunity for our students to see their creativity connect with public safety and community awareness,” Hanks said. “We are proud of our Art Club students and thankful for Antrim Township’s continued partnership with our district.”

Art Club Adviser Miller highlighted the importance of public art and student engagement. “I’m so excited to get more art visible in Greencastle,” Miller said. “I’m thankful for the opportunity and proud of all the students’ hard work on this.”

The following Greencastle-Antrim High School Art Club students participated in painting the plow:

• Addyson Bergquist, Art Club art director

• Rebecca Shatzer, student designer

• Taylor Watts

• Gabe Owolabi

• Lorelei Everly

• Peyton Rucki

• Jocelyn House

• Kylie McGlaughlin

Students shared their excitement and pride in being part of the project.

“Big projects like this are a lot of fun to manage and be a part of, and it’s a great way to have more art around the Greencastle community,” Bergquist said.

“When I found out my design was picked, I was very surprised,” Shatzer said.

“Being part of this project is really rewarding because I’ll be able to see something I helped create around town and show it off to others,” Everly added.

The public can view the Paint the Plow artwork in front of Greencastle-Antrim High School through the holiday season.
