FRANKLIN COUNTY – Residents looking to welcome 2026 with fresh air and adventure can join guided “First Day Hikes” on Jan. 1 at Caledonia State Park and Michaux State Forest.
Both events are part of a statewide initiative from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to encourage healthy, outdoor beginnings in the new year. The Caledonia hike begins at 9 a.m. and runs until 10:30 a.m., while Michaux’s hike follows from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and requires pre-registration.
Led by DCNR staff and volunteers, the hikes range between one and two miles, offering opportunities for families and individuals to explore local trails, connect with nature and enjoy community camaraderie. Organizers say the brisk outings serve as a refreshing kickoff to the year ahead, combining exercise, shared experiences and Franklin County’s scenic landscapes.
Participants are encouraged to dress for winter conditions and bring water. Pets on leashes are typically welcome, depending on park guidelines.
