WAYNESBORO, Pa. – Families filled downtown Waynesboro on Saturday, Feb. 28, for Mainstreet Waynesboro’s Snowman Stroll, enjoying springlike temperatures in the 60s during an afternoon of stories, games and small-town charm.
The Snowman Stroll invited families to follow a Downtown Window Storywalk, reading a children’s book page by page as they moved from storefront to storefront along Main Street. Children also joined in arts and crafts projects, games and special STEAM classes hosted at the Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library, adding hands-on learning to the frosty-themed fun.
A screening of Disney’s “Frozen” at the Waynesboro Theatre capped the day, giving families a chance to relax together after exploring the downtown. Costumed characters resembling a popular ice queen and her snowman friend greeted children for photos, adding another layer of magic to the event.
One of the biggest draws was the Teeny Tiny Snowman Scavenger Hunt, which sent families in search of a miniature snowman hidden inside 11 participating shops. Children checked their clues on brightly colored game cards that offered playful rhymes pointing them toward local shoe stores, boutiques, bookshops and more.
When participants located all 11 tiny snowmen and turned in their completed cards, they earned a free cookie while supplies lasted. Shopkeepers said the game kept a steady stream of families coming through their doors, many discovering new favorite spots downtown.
Organized by Mainstreet Waynesboro, the Snowman Stroll is part of an ongoing series of winter promotions designed to draw visitors to independently owned shops and restaurants. Local sponsors, including health-care providers and community organizations, helped underwrite the free, family-focused activities throughout the day.
Business owners credited the mild weather and family-friendly schedule — running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. — with bringing strong foot traffic to Main Street during a typically quiet time of year. Mainstreet Waynesboro officials said they hope the success of the Snowman Stroll and Teeny Tiny Snowman Scavenger Hunt will encourage families to keep returning downtown long after the last snowman melts.
