You know in this day and age of egg prices being so high – yikes – and other inflationary pressures, I am always looking for a bargain.
I have very vivid memories of my mother talking about the deals she’d found at the grocery store when we were kids, and I can remember thinking, man, I hope I never get that excited about cheap spaghetti sauce.
Guess what? Be careful what you say when you’re a kid because you grow up to be exactly what you never thought you would!
Sigh.
Yeah, I do get excited about inexpensive spaghetti sauce.
I’m pretty much always looking for that bargain.
One of the places you can definitely find an amazing bargain is our thrift store. You didn’t know how I was going to make egg prices about the shelter, did you? Fear not! I am nothing if not moderately talented at the segue.
Our thrift store is at 66 S. Main St. in Chambersburg, and the bargains you can find there are absolutely unreal.
First of all, the ladies who run that store are the absolute best. They know what they’re doing in terms of what we can sell and what we can’t, and they know how to display the items to the best of their ability.
We have volunteers, too, who help at the thrift store, and I know the assistance is most definitely appreciated.
Leadership Franklin County recently helped us revamp the store a bit, so if it’s been a while since you’ve been in our thrift store, make sure you get there sometime soon.
But let’s talk bargains.
I have found shirts and jeans and other clothes in our thrift store that friends still comment on, and when I tell them not only where I found it, but how little I paid, they’re shocked. Trust me, there are some great treasures to be discovered.
And the furniture! Oh, man, do we have nice furniture and ridiculously low prices. We have so many people in this community who know when they donate to our store they are helping our animals, so they provide us with some quality products.
For people moving into their first-time apartment, our thrift store is a godsend. You could stock a kitchen with just about everything you would need.
I also can’t imagine how tough it must be to keep kids in clothes. They apparently grow like weeds. I know my mom was amazed at how quickly my brother would need new pants and shirts. Our thrift store would be a fantastic answer for that little dilemma. We have an amazing supply of children’s clothes that won’t hurt your pocketbook.
There are also books, end tables, lamps, dishes, just about anything you could ever want.
The monetary income from our thrift store helps the animals in the shelter, and because we have such great employees and volunteers, we do turn a profit. So anything you purchase or donate will affect the lives of homeless pets. I can’t think of a better combination.
The ladies do have times and places for donation drop-offs, so make sure you give them a call before stopping by with your items. The number is 717-261-1996. Tell them I said “hi”!
We do ask that donations be in above-average condition and in good working order, and we don’t accept food.
Anyone who would be willing to volunteer to help sort or stock or keep the stores clean would most certainly be welcome with open arms. It would be a great way for folks who are retired to set their own hours while helping a great cause.
So if you’re looking for a bargain, look no farther than the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter’s thrift store. You’ll make life a little better for homeless animals and come out feeling like you might actually be able to afford a dozen eggs!
