FREDERICK, Md. – Rileigh Romberger and Sam Nieman led Smithsburg to a tie for third place on Monday at the Clash at the Creek girls wrestling tournament at Tuscarora High School.
Romberger won the title at the 120-pound class, while Nieman took third at 170 to reach the podium.
Smithsburg scored 197.5 points in the 37-team tournament, which included schools from four states – Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia and Delaware – and Washington DC.
“Despite all of this, our ladies displayed strength and perseverance,” said Smithburg Coach Matthew Crutchfield. “We could not be more proud.”
Romberger remained undefeated for the season through 12 matches, but going 5-0 with four pins and one tech fall.
Nieman went 3-1 and won her third-place medal with a 7-6 decision.
Smithsburg picked up valuable points through the efforts of six other wrestlers
Emmie Menzter (115) placed fourth with a 4-1 record. Macy Orr took fifth at 190 by going 3-1, including a 9-2 win in the fifth-place match.
Kendall Crutchfield (110) and Lillie Menzter (235) each placed sixth in the tournament. Crutchfield recorded a 2-3 record, while Menzter went 3-3 in her matches.
Bella Cox (130) and Laila Ricketts (135) each finished ninth in their classes. Cox went 3-1 and Ricketts was 4-1. Both score pins to win their ninth-place matches.
Sam Rowe (140) went 2-3.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Winters Mill 64, South Hagerstown 25
Aniyah Freeman had 12 pts and Diamond Lloyd added nine on Monday as the Rebels fell to Winters Mill.
Freeman added seven rebounds (two offensive) and three blocks.
