WESTMINSTER, Md. – Jacob Tyler scored a total of 47 points to lead the Smithsburg boys basketball team to a split a pair of games at the Winters Mill Holiday Basketball Tournament this week.
Tyler poured in 24 points in the Leopards’ 56-50 loss to Manchester Valley. James Hare added 14 points and 10 rebounds in Smithsburg’s effort.
The Leopards bounced back on Tuesday for a 66-30 win over Academy for College and Career Exploration with Tyler leading the way with 23 points.

Shepherd’s Batten gains Elite 100 honor
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. – Shepherd University defensive back Klayton Batten has been named to the 2025 Elite 100 Team, D2Football.com’s version of an All-America team.
Batten, a graduate student who was a “squad selection” to the team, recorded 42 tackles (30 solos) with 1.5 tackles-for-loss (-5 yards). He added five interceptions for 99 yards, four pass breakups, four forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. His 0.45 interceptions per game tied for the lead in the PSAC and ranked him eighth nationally. Batten also ranked seventh nationally in forced fumbles with a 0.36 per game average.
The team is selected by staff members of D2Football.com with input from sitting head coaches as well as professional football scouting veteran Josh Buchanan. The team includes first and second team selections for offense, defense, and special teams, along with 25 “Squad” players for offense and defense. Squad players are equivalent to “honorable mention” selections in similar national recognition lists.
Shepherd places 15 on inaugural PSAC Academic All-Conference Team
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Fifteen Shepherd University student-athletes recently gained spots on the inaugural 2025 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Fall 2025 Academic All-Conference Team.
The new honor was created to increase academic recognition for high-achieving student-athletes, which was a priority for the Conference’s membership highlighted in its most recent Strategic Plan.
To be considered, athletes needed to have completed two seasons of eligibility at the nominating campus and four semesters academically – with at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).
They were also required to play in 70% of a team’s contests, which ran through the conference championships.
In total, 343 student-athletes across all 17 PSAC institutions qualified for the Fall 2025 PSAC Academic All-Conference Teams.
The following were Shepherd’s representatives selected to the team for the fall season:
