Ashley Grier has always carried a “been there, done that” attitude.
It started with her days as a champion golfer for Smithsburg High School and carried on to her career on the pro tour.
The PGA of America named Grier captain of the United States team for the Women’s PGA Cup competition, which began Wednesday at Carden Park Resort in Cheshire, United Kingdom.
She’s leading a team of five players in a 54-hole event against Canada, Great Britain/Ireland, Australia, South Africa and Sweden.
With this, Grier becomes the only golfer to play in all four Women’s PGA Cup events.
“I’ve played in three Women’s PGA Cups and each one was incredibly special,” Grier said Tuesday. “This is my first trip to the UK and being the playing captain makes it even more special.”
The Cup was played in Austin, Texas in 2019, followed by a trip to Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico, in 2022 and Sunriver, Oregon, in 2024.
In each case, the U.S. won, finishing ahead of Canada.
All five players play each day and the best three scores count toward the team total.
Grier leads a team consisting of Sandra Changkija of Daytona Beach, Florida; Stephanie Connelly Eisworth of Fleming Island, Florida; Allie Knight of Knoxville, Tennessee; and Kim Paez of Frisco, Texas.
Eisworth is making her third appearance, while Changkija and Knight compete for the second time. Paez is making her debut.
“We have an amazing team with tons of talent,” Grier said. “If we play our own games, we should bring home the trophy.”
