SMITHSBURG – If there was ever any doubt, the Smithsburg girls basketball team proved they are for real on Wednesday.
Sure the 18-0 record is a good indicator, but the Leopards reached that by landing a 74-33 win over Middletown, one of the perennial powers in Class 2A.
Skyla Mastronardi led the way with 21 points for the Leopards while Claire Bono (16 points) and Kara Hoover (11) also reached double figures.
The game was rescheduled after January’s snowstorm. It was originally scheduled to be played at Middletown, but there were no officials available to work the game, which moved it to Washington County.
Mastronardi also had five assists and five steals for the game. Bono added five rebounds, four assists and four steals to her stat line, while hit on three of her four three-point shots. Jayda Tyler added eight points along with five rebounds, three assists and eight steals. Jenna Todd blocked four shots.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Shepherd 65, Millersville 61
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Marcus Banks scored a game-high 22 points to lead Shepherd University to its sixth straight win in a victory over Millersville in a PSAC East game.
Freshman Colby White had 13 points and five rebounds, while sophomore forward Favor Okigweh added 12 points and career-high 17 rebounds for the Rams (15-8, 11-5).
Shepherd had a 38-21 lead at halftime as Banks (12) and White (10) combined for 22 first-half points.
Millersville fought back for an eight-point lead at 55-47 with 5:08 left. Shepherd took the lead for good at 58-55 on a three-point play by Banks with 1:17 left. The Rams sunk 5-of-6 free throws in the game’s final minute to seal the win.
Day Waters led Millersville (16-8, 11-6) with 21 points.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Shepherd 79, Millersville 54
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Cassidy Rhodes had a career-high 19 points to lead Shepherd University to a 79-54 victory over Millersville in PSAC East game.
The Rams (8-13, 6-10) have won three straight games and five of their last six contests.
Sophomore Lamaria Estridge and junior Jenna Liska each had 15 points. Estridge added a team-high nine boards and two steals, while Liska had eight rebounds and three assists.
Junior Kara Wehner = contributed 14 points, six assists, and five boards.
Trailing 33-31 at halftime, the Rams dominated the third quarter as they outscored the Marauders, 23-6, in the quarter to pull away for the win.
Daniella Ranieli added a team-high 14 points for the Marauders (13-11, 8-9).
