Rileigh Romberger led the way as Smithsburg girls wrestling team came up big to win the Washington County Public Schools wrestling tournament on Friday.
Romberger won her third straight county title – one of six overall – as the Leopards outdistanced Williamsport for the team title. Smithsburg also had three wrestlers finish second.
Romberger scored a pin over Williamsport’s Gabi Paul in 1:28 in the 120-pound final to lock down her trifecta of titles. She is also a defending state champion.
Meanwhile, Williamsport won the boys tournament for the 17th time by holding off Boonsboro. The Wildcats placed eight in the finals, with four coming away with tournament titles. Boonsboro had five champions and three seconds.
Kendall Crutchfield joined Romberger as a champion at 110 with a major decision over Boonsboro’s Kallie Cook. Emmaleigh Mentzer was unopposed at 115 for Smithsburg’s second straight title at 115 for her second county title to set the stage for Romberger.
Smithsburg’s Samantha Rowe was also unopposed in her title match at 145.
Bella Cox won her third straight county title by pinning Williamsport’s Odyssey Herron at 3:54 at 130. Smanatha Nieman picked up the Leopards’ sixth individual title win a pin in 1:17 over South Hagerstown’s Tianna Crosby.
Kelly Poy (125) and Laila Ricketts (135) and Lilliannah Mentzer (190) each took seconds for Smithsburg.
North Hagerstown had three champions as Reggan Chapin won at 135 with a pin at 2:23 over Ricketts at 135. Leah Marrero-Gonzalez (155) and Kaiya Smith (235) were unopposed in their title matches. Quinn Chormor (140) finished second for the Hubs.
South Hagerstown’s Ariyanah Freeman pinned Chomor in 1:11 to win the Rebels only title. Crosby finished second at 170.
Boonsboro had one champion in Mckenna Greene, who won the 105 title by pinning Williamsport’s Kayle Brechbill in 1:28. Cook took a second for the Warriors at 110.
Williamsport’s Laicey Durham (100), Emma Paul (125) and Ella Rechtorovic (190) each won titles. It was the second straight for Rechtorovic.
Smithsburg finished third in the boys tournament with two champions and four runners-up.
Logan Crutchfield defeated Boonsboro’s Liam Crawmer 5-0 to win the crown at 144, while Kaden Dietrick took down Williamsport’s Aidan Rhea in 3:44 to win at 150.
Blake Main (138), Diego Adimonye (165), Gabriel Stevens (215) and Trevor Jessup (285) finished second for the Leopards.
Boonsboro made a run at Williamsport with the five titles.
Luke Bucheimer scored a crown for the Warriors at 113 with a pin of Williamsport’s Lance Sweet in :19. Kayden Fluharty followed with a pin of South Hagerstown’s Wyatt Roberts in 1:47.
Kayden McEwan pinned Main in 3:33 for the 138 title.
Tyson Isaacs and JT Griffith defended the upper weights. Isaacs scored a pin over Williamsport’s Cooper Starkey in 2:34 at 175, while Griffith took down Smithsburg’s Stevens in :27 for at 215 for his second straight county title.
Jacob Molina (106), Blake Nalley (126) and Crawmer (144) had second-place finishes for the Warriors.
South Hagerstown had one champion in Logan Ardinger, who score a technical fall in 3:11 over Molina. It was a second title for Ardinger. Paul Ngolle (157) and Roberts took a second for the Rebels.
North Hagerstown picked up two championships with Elliott Moore defeating Williamsport’s Colton Jones 10-4 at 132 and Brady Bruette pinned Ngolle in 3:23 at 157. Bennett Mayne (190) finished second for the Hubs.
Williamsport salted away the title with championship titles by Blake Crawford (126), Logan Durham (165), Ben Kaetzel (190) and Ian Rhea (285). Durham and Kaetzel each scored their third straight county tournament titles.
Sweet (113), Jones (132), Aidan Rhea (150) and Starkey (175) all took seconds for the Wildcats.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Shepherd 88, Kutztown 59
KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Freshman guard Colby White scored a game-high 28 points to lead Shepherd University to a win over Kutztown in PSAC East contest on Saturday.
White connected on 10-of-15 field goals, including 8-of-13 from three-point range, to go with five rebounds for the Rams (17-9, 13-6).
Guard Brody Davis added 18 points, all coming on 6-of-10 effort three-point shots.
Guard Marcus Banks contributed 10 points and seven assists, while sophomore guard Elwyne Wordlaw added 10 points and four assists. Forward Favor Okigweh topped the Rams with 16 rebounds.
Jordan Nkoa Abessolo led the Golden Bears with 19 points and 10 rebounds (6-18, 3-16).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Kutztown 73, Shepherd 67 (OT)
KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Madison Siggins scored a team-high 18 points to lead Kutztown to a 73-67 overtime victory over Shepherd in PSAC East game on Saturday.
The game featured seven lead changes and 10 ties. Shepherd’s Kara Wehner put the Rams ahead with pair of free throws with 1:20 left in regulation. But Olvia Smelas forced the extra session with a tying layup with 49 seconds remaining. Kutztown outscored the Rams, 10-4, in overtime.
Wehner scored a game-high 19 points – including three 3-pointers, and seven to lead the Rams (10-14, 8-11). Freshman Summer Shackelford added 14 points, a game-high 12 rebounds, and three assists.
Forward Lamaria Estridge posted 11 points, 11 rebounds, and two assists and guard Trinity Turner had eight points and eight rebounds.
Jadyn Brenneman added 15 points for the Golden Bears. (17-9, 13-6).
