Shepherd U., Washington County sports roundup

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The best way was the Hardyway for the Shepherd University football team on Saturday.  

Quarterback Michael Hardyway threw for 332 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Rams to their first win of the season with a 38-23 victory over Millersville University.  

Shepherd had lost its first four games but broke the slide to move to 1-4 and 1-1 in the East Division of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East. Millersville fell to 0-5 and 0-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East. 

Handyway, a graduate student who came to Shepherd from Bucknell, hit Kordell Battan with two scoring passes while going 20-of-29 passing. The third TD was to Malakai Brown.  

Handyway hit Brown on a 51-yard pass play for Shepherd’s first score and a 7-0 lead with 3:59 left in the first quarter. Sophomore kicker Max Barba added the extra point. 

Millersville got on the board in the second quarter on Trent McDowell’s 32-yard field goal with 14:55 remaining in the half to cut the deficit to 7-3.  

Jordan Barnett upped Shepherd’s lead to 14-3 by busting a 67-yard run. 

But the Marauders came right back when Ryan Zeltt teamed with Thaddeus Shaw on a 29-yard scoring pass to cut the lead to 14-10 with 8:24 remaining before halftime. Zeltt followed with a 38-yard scoring pass to Shaw to push the Marauders to a 17-14 advantage. 

Shepherd grabbed the lead back and took a 24-17 advantage into the locker room as Handyway hit Batten with a 31-yard TD before Barba nailed a 26-yard field goal to put the Rams ahead. 

Shepherd extended the lead in the third quarter with Handyway’s second TD pass to Batten, a 19-yard score with 4:32 left to move to a 31-17 advantage. Millersville tightened the game in the final minute of the third quarter with a 22-yard TD run by JQ Brown. 

Fullback Grant Swinehart iced the win in the fourth quarter with a two-yard plunge with 13:31 remaining. 

Batten had eight grabs for 113 yards and tight end Caysen Lanza added six catches for 126 yards for the Rams.  Barnett had 14 carries for a game-high 124 yards. Swinehart added 13 carries for 39 yards.  

Shepherd amassed 513 yards of total offense and Millersville totaled 463. 

Linebacker Aydan Willis, defensive back Klayton Batten, linebacker Noel Norman-Williams and defensive back Makai Young each had seven tackles to lead Shepherd’s defense. 

BOYS SOCCER 

South Hagerstown 3, Boonsboro 2 

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – Armando Guandique scored all three goals on Saturday to lift South Hagerstown (2-7) to a victory to snap the Rebels’ seven-game losing streak. 

Guandique scored twice in the second half, including the game-winning goal with about 7 minutes left in regulation. 

Connor Permenter scored both goals for Boonsboro. 

GIRLS SOCCER 

Boonsboro 9, South Hagerstown 1 

Khloe Terrelonge scored the only goal for the Rebels in Thursday’s loss. 

COLLEGE GOLF 

Veara named for PSAC golf award 

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Shepherd University senior Sara Veara was selected as PSAC Women’s Golf Athlete of the Week as announced by the league office on Wednesday. 

Veara shot a one-under-par 143 to take medalist honors at the Cardinal Fall Classic. She fired a 68 (-4) in the first round and added a 75 (+3) in the final round.  

The Rams finished in fifth place in the tournament. 

COLLEGE CROSS COUNTRY 

Shepherd Men 30th, Women 29th at Paul Short Invitational 

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman Logan Feeg finished 86th to lead Shepherd University to pace the Rams at Lehigh University on Thursday. Meanwhile, Riley Staub finished 105th to lead the women’s effort. 

Shepherd men finished 30th in the 34-team field, while the women were 29th out of 34 teams. 

Feeg posted a time of 28:15.9 to lead the Rams. He was followed by Parker (113th, 28:35.7),  Mason Ratke (216th, 30:22.0), Jackson Fiolek (227th,30:34.3), Connor Ireland (285th, 34:30.6), and Nick Yankle (288th, 34:37.47). 

Staub carded a time of 25:29.0 to lead the way for Shepherd.  She was followed by Zoe Boyd (173rd, 26:56.9), Aubrey Fernandez (175th,27:01.2), Jaclyn Unger (260th, 32:03.9), Gabrielle Thompson Servant  (273rd, 35:31.1), and Ashley Anderson (278th, 38:23.9). 

MEN’S SOCCER 

East Stroudsburg 2, Shepherd 0 

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.– East Stroudsburg scored a goal in each half enroute to a shutout win over the Rams on Saturday. 

The loss dropped the Rams 4-5-0 (1-1-0 PSAC East), while East Stroudsburg moved to 4-3-2 (1-0-1).  

East Stroudsburg took a 1-0 lead at the 17:36 mark on an unassisted tally by Ethan Flickinger. 

The Warriors capped the scoring with a goal by Ryan Kiernan assisted by Hunter Stites at the 79:01 mark.  

Shepherd had a 9-7 advantage in shots. The Rams had a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. Shepherd had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.  

On Wednesday, forward Josh Petty scored three goals to lead Shepherd to a 3-1 victory over Shippensburg at Shepherd.  

Shepherd took a 1-0 lead at the 24:05 mark when Petty scored on an assist from Sterling Harris. Shippensburg quickly tied the game at 31:04 on an unassisted goal by Kyle Ganley. 

The Rams took a 2-1 lead on an unassisted tally by Petty notched a pair of unassisted goals in the second half to punctuate victory. The first came at 67:33, followed by the hat trick score at 68:35.  

Shepherd had a 14-2 advantage in shots. The Rams had a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Shepherd had a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. 

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL 

Shepherd sweeps a pair of weekend matches

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Outside hitter Ada McCoy had 10 kills and a match-high five aces to a 25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 11-25, 25-22 victory over Lock on Saturday.  

Sophia Ryan recorded 11 kills and Amya Davis added nine kills, a pair of aces, and eight digs for the Rams (12-4, 2-1 PSAC East). 

Kiela Sanger recorded 12 digs for the Rams, while Macy Buso posted 43 assists and two blocks. 

 On Friday, Smithsburg graduate Emily Ryder recorded 12 kills to lead the Rams to a four-set, 25-20, 19-25, 25-17, 25-23 win over host Bloomsburg. 

Amya Davis added 11 kills and five aces, while Rylee Lenz had a match-high four blocks and Ryan added three. Buso posted a match-high 31 assists and 10 digs. Madigan Faircloth recorded nine digs. 

WOMEN’S SOCCER 

Shepherd scores ties to stay undefeated 

WEST CHESTER, Pa. –No. 17-ranked Shepherd University battled to a 1-1 tie with West Chester in PSAC East women’s soccer action at West Chester on Saturday afternoon. 

Kianna Barber scored on an assist from Lauren Reimold at the 17:24 mark to give the Golden Rams (5-1-3, 3-1-3 PSAC East) a 1-0 advantage.  

Lydia Gable scored on a pass from Annabelle Wunderlich at the 34:07 mark to tie the game for the Rams (3-0-5, 2-0-5 PSAC East). 

Goalkeeper Hannah Wilt had 10 saves for the Rams.  

West Chester had a 25-13 shots advantage and an 11-7 edge in shots on goal. The Rams had a 3-2 margin in corner kicks. 

On Wednesday, Shepherd battled to a 1-1 tie with Millersville in PSAC East women’s soccer action at Shepherd. 

Millersville took a 1-0 lead into the break when Isabel McCoy scored on a misplayed ball by the Rams at the 11:39 mark. 

Anaya Lozano scored an unassisted goal for Shepherd at the 68:19 mark to tie the game. 

The Marauders had a chance for the game-winner on a free kick with 45 seconds left, but the kick sailed high. 

Shepherd had a 19-4 shots advantage and a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. The Rams had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
