When Shalom Dutchfest began, its main draws were auctions for heifers and quilts. The fundraiser for Shalom Christian Academy has evolved in the 46 years since then, although it stays true to its roots with a small animal sale and the occasional quilt incorporated into its auction.
Scheduled for Friday, May 3, and Saturday, May 4, the event serves as the year’s major fundraiser for the pre-K to 12th-grade school on the outskirts of Chambersburg. It also brings together past and current students.
“It’s inspiring and encouraging to see people come back to campus and reconnect with those they went to school with and meet new people,” said Angie Petersheim, administrator of the school with nearly 700 students.
The 2024 Shalom Dutchfest will incorporate auctions, a 5K, children’s activities, a craft show and food sales, including the popular crabcakes, chicken barbecue and strawberry pies.
Check-in for the 5K starts at 7 a.m. Saturday for an 8:30 a.m. start from the school’s soccer field.
“It has become a popular and solid event,” Petersheim said.
The main schedule for Shalom Dutchfest is 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Friday’s auctions start at about 7 p.m. and Saturday’s auctions at about 10 a.m., although Hurley Auctions is running an online option now at shalomdutchfest.com/auctions.
Shalom Dutchfest is held rain or shine. 2020’s event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic; it was followed by a small event in 2021 and a rainy one in 2022. Pleasant weather prevailed for 2023.
“Last year was beautiful weather,” Petersheim said. “People were outside, and kids were running around doing the activities.”
Children have access to a petting zoo, inflatable game, barrel train, ring toss and other games, basketball, Jenga, and more. Youths and adults can compete in a cornhole tournament.
Shalom Dutchfest generates about $75,000 a year for the school on Social Island Road.
“Over the years, food sales have really increased. That’s a significant revenue generator for us,” Petersheim said.
Volunteers tackle the planning and day-of operations to make Shalom Dutchfest successful.
“It feels like there is something for everyone,” Petersheim said.
