HAGERSTOWN – Award-winning blues artist Selwyn Birchwood will bring his electrifying stage presence to Hub City Vinyl on Friday, March 27, as part of the celebration for his newly released album, “Electric Swamp Funkin’ Blues.”
The performance, scheduled for 8 p.m. at 28 E. Baltimore St., coincides with the March 27 release of Birchwood’s fifth Alligator Records album. Tickets are $28 and available through Live at Hub City Vinyl.
Rolling Stone has called Birchwood “a remarkable, contemporary bluesman…a powerhouse young guitarist and soulful vocalist.” Guitar Player describes him as “one of the preeminent voices in contemporary blues,” while Blues Music Magazine names him among the genre’s foremost innovators.
The Florida-based musician blends traditional blues with funk, Stax-flavored rhythm and blues and psychedelic rock, creating a sound that honors classic influences while pushing the genre forward. The new album marks his first self-produced release on Alligator Records.
“Producing allowed me to really take the wheel and steer the music to the exact destinations that I wanted to go,” Birchwood said. “This album is the full realization of the sound I have been cultivating.”
The album features 10 original songs, including “The Church of Electric Swamp Funkin’ Blues,” “Damaged Goods,” “All Hail The Algorithm” and “The Struggle Is Real.” The project reflects Birchwood’s signature mix of gritty blues and contemporary grooves, paired with lyrical themes ranging from personal reflection to modern social commentary.
Known for his high-energy performances, Birchwood has earned praise from blues and jam band audiences alike. Guitar World called him “the real deal,” and blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa has praised his dynamic stage show.
Standing 6 feet 3 inches tall, Birchwood commands attention with searing guitar solos, lap steel mastery and soulful vocals. His barefoot stage presence and magnetic personality have become hallmarks of his live performances.
The Hagerstown appearance offers local music fans a chance to experience one of contemporary blues’ most compelling performers in an intimate venue setting.
