GREENCASTLE – The Allison-Antrim Museum will hold its mid-summer speaker meeting at 7 p.m. July 10 in the German Bank Barn at 365 South Ridge Ave.
Darwin Seiler, a former history teacher in the Waynesboro area school district, will present a PowerPoint program on the Battle of Monterey Pass. The engagement, part of the Confederate retreat from Gettysburg, was fought July 4-5 and is the only Civil War action conducted on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line. The battle, fought in driving rain and darkness, is also the longest in terms of mileage during the war.
Seiler will discuss the origins and development of the Monterey Pass Museum and efforts to preserve the battlefield. He is a Reedsville native, a graduate of Penn Highlands High School and attended Temple University on a football scholarship. Seiler graduated from Shippensburg University and retired after 32 years as a social studies teacher in Maryland and Pennsylvania. He currently serves on the board of The Friends of Monterey Pass Battlefield Museum and speaks frequently on local history.
There is no fee to attend the event, but donations are accepted to support the museum’s annual speaker series. The facility is wheelchair accessible. For more information, visit the museum website or its Facebook page.
