CHAMBERSBURG – The Franklin County Salvation Army is seeking volunteers and donors for its 37th annual Christmas dinner and gifts, which will serve more than 800 people.
The Salvation Army Christmas Dinner has been a lifeline for individuals in Franklin County, bringing more than just food and presents. It brings connection and dignity.
Lynne Newman, chairman of the dinner, noted, “I have personally seen the profound difference this event makes for recipients who are alone, far from family or struggling.
Last year, the organization served close to 800 meals, and indications suggest the need will be even greater this Christmas.
“The Christmas dinner is more than just a meal; it is a moment of dignity and warmth for our neighbors who are struggling,” Newman said. “We rely entirely on the generosity of our community to provide hundreds of warm, festive meals and a Christmas present for every person served.”
🔔HOW YOU CAN HELP:
The Salvation Army is soliciting the community’s assistance in three crucial areas: Volunteers, food and gifts.
1. Volunteer your time
A large team of dedicated volunteers is needed to fill various roles, including:
*Kitchen & meal prep: Helping prepare the extensive menu of turkey, filling, sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, cranberry sauce, fruit salad and desserts.
*Gift wrappers & donors: Preparing and supplying presents for all ages.
*Delivery drivers: Transporting meals across all of Franklin County.
*Volunteer Shift Times: Prep day, Dec. 23, 4 – 8 p.m., and Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. (for cooking, serving and delivery).
2. Donate Food and Ingredients
The Salvation Army relies on ingredient donations to prepare the massive meal. No single person is expected to purchase all of any single item. Instead, all potential food donors are asked to coordinate with Chairman Newman first to manage the inventory and ensure needs are met.
