S. Hagerstown’s flag football team ousted in playoffs, Shepherd contests

FREDERICK, Md. – South Hagerstown’s flag football season ended abruptly and quietly on Friday. 

The 11th-seeded Rebels were ousted from the Maryland Class 4A/3A West bracket with a 6-0 loss to sixth-seed Seneca Valley in a game played at Frederick High School. Frederick won the right to host as the region’s third seed. 

Quarterback Kaelynn Kunkle led the Rebels (2-9) with 122 yards on 9 of 23 passing. 

Trinity Savage: 10 targets, 5 receptions, 67 yards receiving, while Chloe Phoenix caught two passes for 31 yards. Phoenix also completed a pass for seven yards. 

In other playoff action: 

Class 4A/3A West at Clarksburg – No. 8 North Hagerstown was defeated by No. 9 Oakdale, 32-0. 

Class 2A/1A West at Boonsboro – No. 7 Clear Spring defeated No. 10 Poolesville, 7-6 in the first round before losing to No. 2-seed Boonsboro, 14-0. Boonsboro advances to the region semifinals 

Class 2A/1A West at Linganore – No. 6-seed Williamsport defeated No. 11 Catoctin, 8-6 before being eliminated in a 49-7 loss to No. 3 Linganore. Linganore advances to the region semifinals. 

Upcoming schedule 

Class 2A/1A West semifinals on Nov. 4 at Damascus – Smithsburg vs. Damascus, 4:30 p.m.  followed by Boonsboro vs. Linganore. 

Class 2A/1A West finals on Nov. 4 at Damascus – Smithsburg-Damascus winner vs. Boonsboro-Linganore winner. 

Winner advances to the state semifinals on Nov. 7 at M&T Bank Stadium. State championship will be played on Nov. 8 

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL 

Shepherd splits two matches 

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.Outside hitter Ada McCoy led the Shepherd University with 14 kills in a 25-16, 25-21, 21-25, 26-24 loss to West Chester on Saturday in PSAC East match. The loss comes on the heels of Shepherd’s four-set win over Millersville on Friday. 

Middle hitter Rylee Lenz and outside hitter Amya Davis each had 10 kills for the Rams (17-7, 6-4). Lenz added two blocks, while Davis added three aces.   

Macy Buso posted a match-high 37 assists and five blocks. Gracie Zartman a match-high 16 digs for Shepherd. 

Against Millersville, Davis and Sophie Ryan led Shepherd to a 25-13, 25-17, 24-26, 25-21 victory over the Marauders. 

Davis had 16 kills and a .382 attack percentage, while Ryan had 12 kills with a .417 attack percentage. Davis added four aces, and Ryan had three blocks and three aces. 

McCoy added nine kills. Buso posted a match-high 36 assists, six digs, four blocks, and a pair of aces. Outside hitter Gracie Zartman recorded a match-high 23 digs. Libero Madigan Faircloth added 13 digs, while Sofia De Los Mozos had 12. 

MEN’S SOCCER 

Shepherd splits two matches 

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd University was shutout, 2-0, on Saturday in a Senior Day match against West Chester in a PSAC East match. 

West Chester (7-5-3, 4-3-2) took a 1-0 lead on an unassisted tally by Michael Regan at the 6:41 mark. The Golden Rams capped the scoring at the 48:57 mark on a goal by Joseph Maxwell assisted by Luke Newman. 

Goalkeeper Aidan Houck recorded zero saves for the Rams (6-10, 3-6).  

On Wednesday, Josh Petty scored on a penalty kick at the 75:40 mark to lift Shepherd to a 4-3 victory over Shippensburg in PSAC East match at Shippensburg. 

Shippensburg took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Liam Heitmann assisted by Ethan Omondi at the 20:40 mark. The Red Raiders made it 2-0 just before the break as Nate Herb scored on an assist by Cameron Henry at the 43:26 mark. 

Shepherd got on the board at the 47:34 mark when Ron Abarjel scored on an assist from Aaron Sullivan. The Rams tied the game at 2-2 at the 49:24 mark with an own goal. 

Shippensburg regained a 3-2 lead on a penalty kick goal by Ethan Paulukow at the 73:48 mark. 

Shepherd tied the game up at 3 with a goal from Sterling Harris on a pass from Dylan Shepherd at the 74:49 mark, setting the stage for Petty’s game winner. 

Houck posted two saves for the Rams. Ryan Krumenacker recorded four saves for the Raiders. 

WOMEN’S SOCCER 

Shepherd scores win, important tie 

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Midfielder Josie Beezel and forward Merritt Delk each scored a goal and assisted on another to lead Shepherd to a 5-1 win over No. 21-ranked Bloomsburg in PSAC East game on Senior Day on Saturday. 

On Wednesday, the Rams scored late to lock up a 2-2 tie with No. 16 West Chester.  

Beezel scored on a pass from Delk at the 7:56 mark on Saturday to give the Rams (7-1-6, 6-1-6) a 1-0 advantage. 

Midfielder Annabelle Wunderlich scored on an assist from Beezel at the 11:01 mark to give the Rams a 2-0 lead. 

The Rams pushed it to a 4-0 advantage heading into the break as midfielder Reagan Ackermann scored an unassisted goal at the 15:26 mark and midfielder Taylor Schuck found the back of the net on a pass from Lydia Gable at the 37:26 mark. 

Daryn Savage scored an unassisted goal at the 62:13 mark to get the Huskies (9-5-2, 6-5-2 PSAC East) on the scoreboard. 

Forward Merritt Delk completed the scoring with a goal on a feed from midfielder Olivia Gardner at the 81:19 mark. 

Goalkeeper Hannah Wilt recorded a save for the Rams.  

Against West Chester, midfielder Anaya Lozano scored on a pass from senior forward Lydia Gable at the 85:09 mark to help Shepherd tie with No. 16-ranked West Chester in a PSAC match. 

Shepherd took the early lead as Beezel scored on a feed from midfielder Sarah Peternel at the 5:12 mark. 

West Chester tied the game when Lauren Reinhold scored on assists from Kianna Barber and Victoria Pungello at the 33:32 mark. The Golden Rams took a 2-1 advantage on an unassisted tally by Olivia Conroy at the 50:30 mark. 

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY 

Shepherd takes second at the Go-Fast River Run 

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. –Shepherd placed second with a 54 in a three-team Go-Fast River Run hosted by Lock Haven University on Saturday.  IUP took the team title with a 15, and Katie McCormick of IUP took individual honors with a time of 24:11.60. 

The Rams were led by junior Riley Staub, who finished 13th with a time of 28:40.40. She was followed by Aubrey Fernandez (14th,26:53.1), Jaclyn Unger (15th, 28:49.90), Zoe Boyd (19th,31:19.90), Ashley Anderson (20th, 31:54.60) and Gabrielle Thompson Servant (21st, 33:37.00).
