Aniyah Freeman collected 11 points and 10 rebounds on Friday to the South Hagerstown girls basketball team to its second win of the season with a 34-27 win over Brunswick.
Freeman added eight steals, three blocks and a pair of assists to help ignite the Rebels.
Kristen Gyamfi notched eight points with three rebounds and three steals, while Khloe Terralonge had five points, four rebounds and three steals.
Eliyana Barnes finished with five rebounds and Diamond Lloyd score six points for South.
BOYS BASKETBALL
North Hagerstown 74, Urbana 69
FREDERICK, Md. – North Hagerstown continues to win, but the Hubs do it at the expense coach Nate Naylor’s stomach lining.
The Hubs’ seem to have the formula down pat – get a slow start, trail at halftime and using a big charge in the fourth quarter to pull out victory. It worked last week when North hosted South Hagerstown and then again on Thursday in an overtime win over Boonsboro.
Joey Dorsey come up big again in his second game after returning from a broken foot. He poured in 32 points to lead North – including four 3-pointers – and grabbed a seven rebounds to go with four assists.
Dorsey paced North in the win over Boonsboro with 18 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter and overtime in a 79-74 victory.
Brayden Cespedes followed with 16 points with five assists and three blocked shots. Michael Bell added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
North erased an 11-point deficit and trailed 19-12 after the first quarter and 35-32 at the half. The Hubs were down by two points after three quarters before using a 23-16 fourth quarter to pull out the win.
Brunswick 73, South Hagerstown 62
Avery Cosley led the Rebels with 20 points and six rebounds for the Rebels, while Luke Leisinger added 12 points and five rebounds in the loss.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Concord 20, Shepherd 11
ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord scored runs in all eight innings on Friday to hold off Shepherd.
Concord scored three runs in the second and four in the third to take an 8-6 lead. The Mountain Lions (3-5) put the game out of reach in the seventh on a three-run home run by Atticus Goodson.
Matthew DiSanti went 3-for-5 with five RBIs for Concord
Ryan Fluharty led Shepherd’s offense by going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Shepherd (5-2) took a 2-1 lead in the second inning behind an RBI-ground out from outfielder Ethan Jones (and a run-scoring double from infielder Braylon Conner, formerly from Hagerstown Community College.
After falling behind 8-2, the Rams rallied for four runs in the fourth, highlighted by a Fluharty’s three-run home run.
Concord built a 12-6 lead before outfielder Alex Rose got a run back for Shepherd with a solo homer in the fifth.
The Rams scored twice in the seventh to cut the efficient to 15-9 on RBIs by Jones and Etan Rosario.
Shepherd cut the score to 18-10 when Fluharty scored on an RBI from Burgreen in the eighth.
Shepherd pitcher Allen Miller took the loss, allowing eight runs on eight hits in 2 2/3 innings with a walk and two strikeouts.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Charleston (W.Va.) 1-7, Shepherd 0-2
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Shepherd University opened the season with a pair of losses the University of Charleston.
Charleston (5-3) scored the game’s only run in the sixth inning of the opener on a sacrifice fly by Kayla Moran. Pitcher Addison Mass the complete-game victory, allowing two hits and striking out 15 in seven innings.
Infielder Cate Russian went 2-for-3 to pace the Rams. Shepherd pitcher Madelayne Ruffner despite only allowing one run on four hits and one walk, while striking out 11.
Concord jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a run second and two in the third inning.
Shepherd got a two-run homer from outfielder Haylee Hartman, former Boonsboro standout, in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Alina Giles hit a solo homer in the fourth to up Charleston’s lead to 4-2.
The Mountain Lions added three runs on two hits and an error in the seventh to close out the scoring.
Shepherd pitcher Sam Colaw took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Seton Hill 17, Shepherd 4
GREENSBURG, Pa. – Sydney Marusko recorded seven goals and two assists to lead No. 19-ranked Seton Hill over Shepherd in the Rams’ season opener.
Seton Hill had a 9-4 lead at the half behind four first-half goals from Marusko.
Midfielder Katherine Stevenson, attacker Kloey Batchellor, attacker Holly Poe and attacker Rebekah Forney each had goals for the Rams. Midfielder Grace Lyon and freshman attacker/midfielder Rebekah Stotler had assists.
Luetta Seipp had game-high efforts of seven ground balls and five caused turnovers to lead the defensive effort for the Rams.
Seton Hill had a 42-19 advantage in shots with a 28-10 edge in shots on goal.
