Ritchie Boys family reunion to honor WWII intelligence heroes

CASCADE, Md. – The Ritchie History Museum is set to make history of its own as it welcomes families, historians and the public to the inaugural Ritchie Boy Family Reunion, a landmark event celebrating the remarkable legacy of the Ritchie Boys – Jewish refugees, immigrants and U.S. citizens who served in U.S. Army military intelligence during World War II.

The event, held at the historic Fort Ritchie in Cascade, Maryland, promises a day filled with education, remembrance and community. The Ritchie Boys, many of whom were young German-Jewish immigrants, played a pivotal role in gathering battlefield intelligence that helped turn the tide of the war in Europe. Trained in Morse code, interrogation, psychological warfare and combat at Fort Ritchie, these men used their linguistic skills and cultural knowledge to extract vital information from captured German soldiers – without resorting to violence.

On July 26, the museum will open its doors for a full day of activities, including a seven-speaker lecture series, guided museum tours and interactive exhibits. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the newly restructured Interrogation exhibit, offering an immersive look at the techniques and environments that defined the Ritchie Boys’ work. Lunch will be served at Lakeside Hall, followed by a Celebration of History Dinner featuring keynote speaker Dr. Amanda Rothschild, whose book,” My Zayde is a Superhero,” chronicles the life of her grandfather, Ernest Rothschild, a Ritchie Boy and Holocaust survivor.

The Ritchie Boys’ contributions extended far beyond the battlefield. After WWII, many assisted with the Nuremberg Trials and went on to become scholars, government officials and community leaders. Their stories, once classified, are now preserved in the museum’s expanding digital archive, thanks to support from Maryland Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The Ritchie Boy Family Reunion is open to the public, with advance ticket purchase required for all events. Organizers hope the gathering will not only honor the past but also inspire future generations to remember and learn from the extraordinary courage and ingenuity of the Ritchie Boys.
