CHAMBERSBURG – Norfolk Southern Railroad has rescheduled maintenance work on the Orchard Drive railroad crossing near Wayne Avenue. The project, originally set to begin Monday, March 24, will now start April 2 and last until approximately April 9.
The delay is due to setbacks experienced by Norfolk Southern field crews, according to an update released by Chambersburg Borough. The closure will impact traffic in Franklin County, but access to businesses on Orchard Drive will remain open from the Wayne Avenue entrance to the Chambers Five Business Park.
Motorists are advised to use alternative routes during the maintenance period. Through traffic between Wayne Avenue and South Main Street must use Nitterhouse Drive or Kriner Road to avoid the closed railroad crossing.
Emergency vehicles have been notified of the closure, and the borough is working to inform residents and businesses in the area. Affected businesses include Ventura Foods, WellSpan Rehabilitation Results Fitness, The Orchards and several others, all of which will remain accessible via Orchard Drive from Wayne Avenue.
RoadSafe Traffic Systems, the contractor handling the project, has designated Thomas Hovenstine as the representative for inquiries. He can be reached at 412-445-5606.
Chambersburg Borough officials emphasize that this is not a borough project, and they are not responsible for the street detours established by Norfolk Southern Railroad.
