Quartet of area drivers – Booze, Crouse, Friese and Walls – nail weekend wins

Mother Nature did all she could to spoil Hagerstown Speedway’s crown-jewel event — the two-day Hub City 100 — but persistence ultimately paid off as race officials were able to complete a full program.

Brian Booze, for one, is certainly glad.

The Greencastle driver landed a win in the Late Model Sportsman feature on Sunday, a makeup day for a Saturday rainout. The weather also factored into racing on Friday, with only one feature reaching completion.

It all added up to a big day on the track on Sunday and locals, led by Booze, were up for the challenge. Booze ran the third-fastest time in hot laps and took second in his heat race, before zipping from fourth to first in the 24-lap main event. He was chased to the finish line by Mercersburg’s Kyle Lee (3rd), Hagerstown’s Wesley Bonebrake (8th), and Greencastle’s Brandon Bard (10th).

The Crate Late Models race was highlighted by strong finishes from Hagerstown’s Brady Neff (2nd) and Avery McMellen (5th), while the 41-lap Super Late Models included Top 10 finishes from two area drivers: Mercersburg’s Jakob Piper (8th) and Greencastle’s Gary Stuhler (9th).

Booze was one of four local drivers to win races last weekend. He was joined in Victory Lane by Greencastle’s Aidan Crouse, as well as Chambersburg’s Devin Friese and Gunnar Walls.

Crouse and Friese both won at the same track: Path Valley Speedway. Competing in the 270 Sprints, Crouse surged to the checkers over fellow Greencastle driver Bradyn Kuhn, who landed in fourth. As for Friese, he blasted off for victory in the East Coast Legends Summer Slam feature, toppling a field that included Fairfield’s Seth Kearchner (6th).

Also at Path Valley, Chambersburg’s Kevin Bard took second in the Thunder Cars, while Waynesboro’s Darren Kauffman finished sixth in the 600 Sprints.

Walls raced under the bright lights at Port Royal Speedway on Friday and was sharp from start to finish in the Limited Late Models. He kicked off his evening with a heat win, before zooming from fourth to first in the 15-lap feature. Also at Port Royal, on Thursday night, Fayetteville’s Cole Dewease posted a third-place finish in the 305 Sprints.

Two other local drivers, Hagerstown’s Keith Reed and Greencastle’s Todd Walls, were also in action last weekend. Reed secured a runner-up finish in the Hobby Stocks at Winchester Speedway, while Walls had a sixth-place showing in the PA Micro Midgets 500 feature at Linda’s Speedway.

Below is a track-by-track, feature-by-feature look at races from last weekend that included drivers from the LocalNews1.org coverage area:
