Proactive preventive medicine can make big difference

HAGERSTOWN – They’ve always said an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. And Dr. Michael S. Day is living proof. He shifted his medical career from orthopedic surgery to a focus on performance and preventive care, inspired by his family, especially his twin 7 year olds who were born prematurely.

“I was inspired by them to be healthy for them and be there for them and be the best father I could be,” Dr. Day said. Reflecting on his experience as an orthopedic surgeon, he realized that the traditional medical system is primarily designed to treat disease, not prevent it. “I was working as an orthopedic surgeon, treating injuries and not able to prevent them.”

Dr. Day’s practice embraces a proactive approach aimed at helping generally healthy people maintain and improve their health before issues arise. “That’s why I switched to the more preventive type of medicine,” he explained.

A key difference in his practice is the emphasis on prevention, rather than waiting for a formal diagnosis. “We don’t accept insurance payments, and that enables us to partner directly with the patient… so we can just pursue health rather than a diagnosis,” Dr. Day noted.

Patients see him monthly instead of the typical once-a-year primary care visits, allowing for closer monitoring and faster adjustments. “We’re gathering data more frequently and having more frequent check-ins… that way we can get quicker feedback on the effectiveness of what we’re doing.”

Dr. Day recognizes the challenges patients face with lifestyle changes and highlights the role of accountability and support. “One way we’ve sought to overcome that is by providing accountability. We also have a holistic health coach to identify ways that they can make effective and lasting change.”

He is clear that his practice complements rather than replaces traditional primary care: “I ask that all my patients maintain a primary care physician because we’re so focused on prevention, we’re not set up to do acute care.”

Beyond individual care, Dr. Day’s clinic engages actively with the community through educational events, athletic support, and wellness seminars. “We do educational events, we’re involved with athletic events, and we have community acupuncture and nutrition seminars,” he shared.

Looking forward, Dr. Day plans to expand offerings to include less intensive programs with quarterly visits to improve accessibility. Prospective patients can book free 15-minute discovery calls via the clinic’s website.

Dr. Day hopes his story encourages both patients and healthcare professionals to prioritize their health. “Healthy doctors provide better care for their patients; we can all focus on something, even if it’s just one thing at a time. There’s always something that you can work on to be better at,” he said.
