Pennsylvania expands autism support resources

Boosting autism awareness and acceptance remains a central focus across Pennsylvania this April, as communities recognize Autism Acceptance Month and work to expand support for individuals and families.

Formerly known as Autism Awareness Month, the observance has shifted in recent years to emphasize acceptance, inclusion and meaningful opportunities for people on the autism spectrum. Advocates say the change reflects a broader understanding of autism and the need to move beyond awareness toward action.

The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services’ Office of Developmental Programs continues to support those efforts through a range of services designed for individuals of all ages. These supports include educational resources, employment assistance, health care coordination and long-term planning tools for families.

A key component of the state’s strategy is the Autism Services, Education, Resources and Training Collaborative, or ASERT. Funded by the Office of Developmental Programs, ASERT serves as a centralized hub for information and guidance, helping Pennsylvanians navigate available services and supports.

Through its online platform, ASERT provides access to toolkits, training materials and community resources. The initiative is designed to streamline information and ensure individuals with autism and their families can more easily find the help they need.

In addition to statewide resources, ASERT maintains an event listing that highlights programs, workshops and activities. Residents can find autism-related events, including those in Franklin County, by visiting the ASERT Resource Guide at paautism.org/events.

Advocates say community engagement is a critical part of fostering acceptance. By attending events, learning about autism and supporting inclusive practices, residents can help create environments where individuals on the spectrum are valued and supported.

As Autism Acceptance Month continues, organizations across Pennsylvania encourage individuals, schools and businesses to promote understanding and expand opportunities for those living with autism.
