Penn State watershed stewards host 6th annual plant fundraiser

CARLISLE – The Penn State Master Watershed Stewards of Cumberland Valley are holding their sixth annual Native Tree and Shrub Fundraiser, with online and phone orders accepted through Aug. 27 at 5 p.m. or until sold out. The fundraiser supports stream repair projects, tree plantings, youth education programs and other environmental initiatives in the region.

This year’s sale features 23 varieties of native trees and shrubs, including popular choices like pawpaw and persimmon. Available in 2-gallon containers for $33, with one item in a 1-gallon size for $20 and another in a 3-gallon size for $45, the plants cater to needs such as privacy, shade, pollinator attraction, or aesthetic landscaping. Detailed information on mature height, sun and soil needs, and bloom times is available on the order website.

Curbside pickup is scheduled for Sept. 26 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at two locations: Allen Road Campus, 310 Allen Rd., Carlisle, for Cumberland County, and Franklin County Extension, 181 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg, for Franklin County. Plants not picked up during this time will be donated unless prior arrangements are made.

Orders can be placed online at extension.psu.edu/mws-tree-sale-workshop or by phone at 877-345-0691, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. All items must be preordered, as no plants will be available for purchase at pickup sites. The Master Watershed Stewards guarantee healthy specimens at pickup but cannot offer refunds or guarantees after pickup due to variations in planting and care.

Residents are advised to consider above- and below-ground utilities and mature plant sizes when selecting trees and to call 811 before digging. The stewards emphasize that their plantings help intercept stormwater, stabilize soils and filter pollutants, contributing to healthier local ecosystems.
