WAYNESBORO — Smoke and toxic fumes from a self-cleaning oven prompted the evacuation of Trinity House Apartments on North Potomac Street early Tuesday.
The incident occurred in a third-floor unit where residents activated the oven’s self-cleaning cycle, according to fire officials. Thick smoke quickly filled the apartment, forcing the building’s evacuation as a precaution.
The Borough of Waynesboro Fire Dept., Waynesboro Ambulance Squad, Waynesboro Volunteer Fire Department and Washington County, Md., Leitersburg Volunteer Fire Co. responded to the scene. Crews ventilated the area and confirmed no fire had ignited.
Residents were allowed to return to their apartments within one hour, with no injuries reported. Officials reminded residents to follow manufacturer guidelines for self-cleaning ovens to prevent similar hazards.
