John served in Iceland and aboard the USS Saratoga CV.60 with the US Navy from August of 1960 until he was honorably discharged in August of 1964.

John was passionate about cars, building an impressive collection and thriving as a salesman at Mercedes Benz of West Chester for 25 years until his retirement in 2005. He enjoyed golf, though he played for fun rather than mastery, and was a devoted Philadelphia sports fan, holding season tickets for the Eagles and Flyers. John and Connie were members of the West Chester Country Club and, later, the Waynesboro Country Club.
