CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Chambersburg Country Club hosted the sixth and final Mid-Penn Colonial Division varsity golf match, and with two teams battling for the regular season championship – Northern and Gettysburg – it was Northern and Gettysburg finishing in a dead heat.
Greencastle-Antrim bested the field on Tuesday, Sept. 8, with a score of 321. That was nine strokes ahead of second-place Chambersburg (330) and 22 strokes in front of third-place Northern (343).
The Polar Bears entered the match two games behind Gettysburg. Thanks to Shippensburg, which ended the day tied with Northern, the Polar Bears finished 23-7. That’s because Gettysburg finished fifth with 347. Waynesboro was last with 352.
The final standings are as follows: Northern (23-7); Gettysburg (23-7); Greencastle-Antrim (19-11); Shippensburg (12-18); Chambersburg (9-21); Waynesboro (4-26).
Shippensburg’s Kaydee Beckenbaugh was not only the top girls’ finisher, but she was the top overall finisher as well. Beckenbaugh carded a 76, one stroke ahead of Chambersburg’s Kole Peiffer and two strokes in front of co-third-place finishers Mason Lehman of Chambersburg and Landon Summers of Greencastle-Antrim.
Camden Eby and Bryce Davidson, both of G-A, tied for fifth place with 79. The Blue Devils trio helped bolster their team score. Meanwhile, Jex McDowell finished in a two-way tie for 12th place with Shippensburg’s Kaden Ramsey with 85.
Waynesboro was led by Caiden Shacreaw (82). Landon Crable tied Gettysburg’s Ryan Cunningham for 14th place with 86. Waynesboro’s Rylan Nichols and Abby Byers each shot 92 to round out the team scoring.
Now that the regular season is complete, it’s time for the postseason. First up is the Mid-Penn Conference qualifier on Sept. 17 at Manada Golf Course in Grantville. There will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start to qualify for the Mid-Penn Conference Championships to be held on Sept. 22 at Range End Golf Course in Dillsburg, also a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
The District 3 Championships, held at Briarwood for years, will be played at Honey Run Golf Course in York. The event will run from Thursday, Oct. 1 to Saturday, Oct. 3, with 10 a.m. shotgun starts each day.
Finally, the PIAA Golf Championships will take place from Sunday, Oct. 18 to Tuesday, Oct. 20 at Penn State University golf courses.
“It looks like I will be advancing five players to the postseason,” said Waynesboro coach Ryan Henderson. “Abby Byers is already in the Mid-Penn Championship. Caiden Shacreaw, Landon Crable and Rylan Nichols will need to go to the Mid-Penn qualifier on Sept. 17. Ale Showaker will be going to the Mid-Penn qualifier as well on the girls’ side.”
