BALTIMORE — The North Hagerstown girls and Smithsburg boys captured team titles Monday at the MPSSAA State Track & Field Championships at Morgan State University.
The meet began Thursday for classes 1A and 2A and Friday for classes 3A and 4A. All four classes competed Monday after Saturday’s scheduled final day was postponed because of weather.
Twin freshmen Caroline and Mackenzie Philp powered the Hubs to the Class 3A girls title, combining for 47 of the team’s 52 1/2 points. Oakland Mills finished second with 51 points, while Frederick placed third with 49.
Caroline Philp won the 1,600 on Monday in 5:04.95 after winning the 3,200 on Friday in 10:44.31. Mackenzie Philp won the 800 in 2:16.65 after placing third in both the 3,200 (10:49.83) and 1,600 (5:05.61). Caroline added a fourth-place finish in the 800 (2:20.28).

Led by their distance contingent, the Leopards completed the trifecta by winning the Class 1A boys team title Monday, adding to the state championships they captured in cross country in the fall and indoor track in the winter. Smithsburg finished with 67 1/2 points, while Bohemia Manor placed second with 50 and Havre de Grace took third with 43.
Junior Dylan Herbst set the pace, earning silver medals in the 1,600 (4:21.95) and 3,200 (9:39.46) and bronze in the 800 (1:57.97) after teaming with Camilo Mellott, Gavin Gross and Dylan Lowe to win the 4×800 relay in 8:11.28 in Thursday’s opening event.

Three other Washington County athletes won Class 1A state titles: Clear Spring’s Katelyn Moffitt in the girls shot put (36-2 1/2), teammate Daniel Apiou in the boys triple jump (46-7 1/2) and Boonsboro’s Sidney Turner in the girls discus (121-4).
