Norovirus prevention: Safeguarding your health and community

One of the best ways to stay healthy this cold season is to wash your hands.

Norovirus, a highly contagious gastrointestinal illness, can spread rapidly through communities. By implementing the following comprehensive prevention strategies, families can protect themselves and others from this persistent virus, area healthcare officials said.

Prioritize Personal Hygiene

  1. Thorough Handwashing: Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the bathroom, before handling food and after changing a diaper. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are not as effective against norovirus.
  2. Self-Isolation: If you’re experiencing symptoms, stay home and avoid contact with others for at least 48 hours after symptoms subside. Do not prepare food for others if you are ill.

Practice Safe Food Handling

  1. Proper Food Preparation:
    • Wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly
    • Cook shellfish to an internal temperature of 145°F (63°C)
    • Keep raw and cooked foods separate during storage and preparation
  2. Kitchen Hygiene:
    • Regularly sanitize kitchen surfaces, utensils, and cutting boards
    • Use separate cutting boards for raw meats and produce
  3. Food Safety: Discard any food that may have been exposed to norovirus.

Implement Rigorous Cleaning Protocols

  1. Immediate Response to Contamination:
    • Use disposable gloves and paper towels for initial cleanup
    • Apply a chlorine bleach solution (1,000-5,000 ppm) or EPA-registered norovirus disinfectant
    • Allow disinfectant to remain on surfaces for at least 5 minutes
    • Follow up with hot, soapy water cleaning
  2. Laundry Care:
    • Wash contaminated items separately using hot water and detergent
    • Dry on the highest heat setting
    • Handle contaminated laundry with care, washing hands thoroughly afterward

Educate and Stay Informed

  1. Utilize Resources: Refer to reputable sources like the CDC for up-to-date information and guidance.
  2. Community Awareness: Share prevention strategies with family, friends, and colleagues to create a more resilient community.

By diligently following these guidelines, you can significantly reduce the risk of norovirus transmission and protect both your health and that of those around you.
