MedCamp 2025 offers hands-on healthcare experience for aspiring students

MONT ALTO — High-achieving ninth- and tenth-grade students with an interest in healthcare careers will have an opportunity to explore the field through MedCamp 2025, a week-long immersive program hosted by Penn State Mont Alto. The camp, scheduled for June 23-27, promises hands-on activities and real-world exposure to a variety of medical professions.

MedCamp is designed to give students a comprehensive introduction to healthcare careers, including nursing, oncology, cardiology, radiology, emergency medicine, surgery, dentistry, physical therapy, occupational therapy and veterinary medicine. Participants will engage in practical activities such as suturing, phlebotomy, nursing diagnostics, and operating room simulations.

The program also includes field trips to prominent healthcare and educational institutions such as Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital, Shenandoah University and Wilson College.

The camp runs daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with drop-off and pick-up at Penn State Mont Alto’s campus located at 1 Campus Drive. The cost is $495 per student, which includes lunch and transportation for field trips.

Key Dates for Applicants

  • February 24: Online applications opened.
  • April 18: Deadline for completed applications.
  • Week of April 21: Notifications of acceptance will be sent.
  • May 16: Payment and required documentation due.

The application process requires two teacher or counselor recommendations and a student statement of interest. Organizers encourage applicants to prepare their references in advance and ensure recommendations are submitted promptly.

MedCamp is the only program of its kind in the region and offers students a rare chance to gain insights into the healthcare industry. “This camp provides an invaluable experience for students who are curious about healthcare but may not yet know which path they want to pursue,” said Sara Bamat, the program coordinator.

Parents are encouraged to review Penn State’s youth program policies to understand the safety measures in place for participants.

For more information or questions about the application process, contact Bamat at 814-863-0758 or via email at [email protected]. Applications are open until April 18.
