WAYNESBORO– Friday, Dec. 1, marks the return of Luminaries for Loved Ones, a special Waynesboro event sponsored by the Waynesboro Area Fellowship of Churches and Mainstreet Waynesboro Inc.
From 6 to 8 p.m., Main Street will be aglow with candlelit luminaries, each honoring or commemorating a loved one.
The Waynesboro Church of the Brethren’s Pastor Andrew Paterno will be on hand to bless the luminaries, adding a touch of spirituality to this heartwarming occasion.
In addition to the luminaries, Mainstreet Waynesboro Inc. will be hosting its First Friday event, featuring local businesses, food vendors, and entertainment.
This is the second Luminary night in Waynesboro. In 2021, the inaugural event featured 60 luminaries, and the proceeds were donated to the local homeless shelter.
The event’s inspiration stems from a personal experience of the organizer, Toya McCleary. Years ago, McCleary’s gymnastics team sold luminaries as a fundraiser for the YMCA’s living nativity scene. The luminaries lined the path leading to the nativity, creating a magical and enchanting atmosphere. Struck by the beauty and symbolism of the luminaries, McCleary envisioned a similar event to honor loved ones on Main Street, especially during the festive holiday season.
The luminaries will be set up around the square on the four corners, creating a radiant display that illuminates the heart of Waynesboro. Astounded by the shimmering lights and reminiscing about cherished moments, participants will contribute to a cause that brings significant change to the lives of others.
