Communities across Franklin and Washington counties will come together this September to honor the memory of those lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and to recognize the courage of the first responders and service members who risked everything that day. A series of memorial walks, ceremonies, presentations and special events will provide opportunities for reflection, remembrance and unity as the nation marks the anniversary of 9/11.
–On Thursday, Sept. 11th, at 7 p.m., the Waynesboro Theatre will be hosting a presentation by restorative justice expert Heather Burns. Immediately following the presentation at 7:30 p.m. the “World Trade Center” movie, starring Nicholas Cage, will be shown.
–On Thursday, Sept. 11th, at 5 p.m., Washington Township will be holding a memorial ceremony for 9/11 at Red Run Park.
–On Sunday, Sept. 7th, at 12:30 p.m., at the Historic Letterkenny Chapel in Chambersburg, a 9/11 memorial will be held. Before that, at 8 a.m., there will be a salute to veterans and 9/11 memorial car show at 2171 Carbaugh Ave., Chambersburg.
–On Saturday, Sept. 6th at 8:30 a.m., the community of Greencastle will be walking from Eastern Avenue to Baltimore Street to symbolize the 110 floors of the World Trade Center. Greencastle Mayor Ben Thomas Jr. and members of the Rescue Hose Company will be leading the participants to honor the firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel and civilians who were at the towers to save lives. At the end of the procession around 9 a.m., there will be a moment of silence and brief program at 60 N. Washington St.
–On Tuesday, Sept. 9th at 6 p.m., the Washington County Office of Emergency Management will be holding the annual Remembrance in the Park event at the Washington County Emergency Service Tribute Gardens in Hagerstown City Park. The memorial will be paying tribute to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
