BLUE RIDGE SUMMIT – Jana and Tim Gochenour are passionate about their new business, Market57, located at Buchanan Trail East (Route 16) and Monterey Avenue in Blue Ridge Summit. Customers, sellers and exceptional merchandise bring their store to life.
Jana loves artisans. “To be so talented is a gift, and I love that I have a place for them to demonstrate and display their talent.”
Market57 is named for their son’s football jersey number 57. He loved it and used it toward his travel ball.
Professional artists and school students
Market57 vendors excel at finding unique pieces to buy, sell and display artistically. They come from a wide geographic area: Frederick and Taneytown, Maryland; and Hanover, Chambersburg and beyond. They also have 12 local artists and crafts people, including oil and watercolor painters, jewelry makers, woodworkers and carpenters, aestheticians and lotion makers, glassworkers, needle workers, seamstresses and crocheters.
Jana said that, “We have teams of sister vendors, a husband and wife team, fathers and daughters, as well as a high school girl.
“We opened with about half of my spaces filled, and by the end of that first weekend, I had filled my shop, plus spaces I hadn’t thought about filling! We have a list of additional interested vendors. More people ask about spaces every week.”
Renovations
The building was formerly the Hilltop Restaurant which closed about 30 years ago. While the Gochenours turned the restaurant into a retail store, various passersby stopped out of interest; some became vendors, and others were former Hilltop Restaurant customers.
The very first vendor was a friend, and many of their best friends have contributed skills to make this a unique shop since renovations began about one and a half years ago.
At the end of the day
Jana and Tim love everything about their new business so much they’ve decorated their home in the same style in similar colors, with the addition of their own unique pieces of vintage and antiques that are special to them. Some of their items have been in the family for generations or were rescued from near and far. They are a baseball family and love vintage baseball items.
Tim is Jana’s biggest supporter and Max, a senior dog at 11 years, is the doorbell and protector and comes home with them. Jana feels truly blessed to have been able to leave her 18-year job and pursue this amazing adventure.
Future plans on the mountain
Jana and Tim hope Blue Ridge Summit remains a quiet, peaceful, small town and would love to see more people visit and discover the greatness of this small town and all of the businesses in the area.
Market57 LLC’s hours are Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
