Lingamore bests Smithsburg boys in lacrosse and North in baseball, Shepherd scores

LINGANORE, Md. – Goliath took out David on Tuesday. 

The larger school prevailed on Tuesday as Linganore bested Smithsburg 18-3 in a boys lacrosse matchup. 

Linganore is a Class 3A school in Frederick County, while Smithburg is Class 1A from Washington County.  

Zach Linn, Nick Roncone and Kaden Dietrich each scored a goal for the Leopards and Marquis Weakfall had two assists, while goalkeeper Dante Rucci collected 12 saves. 

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL 

Linganore 11, North Hagerstown 1 

LINGANORE, Md. – Linganore scored six runs in the first two innings on Monday to turn back North Hagerstown, handing the Hubs their first loss of the season. 

James Ortiz led North (5-1), who scored the Hubs’ only run in the fourth, with a hit and two stolen bases. 

Eli Brown and Jordan Gingrich shared the other two of North’s three hits in the game. 

Joey Dorsey (0-1) took the loss. 

COLLEGE SOFTBALL 

Shepherd 2-1, Kutztown 0-11  

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Pitcher Madelayne Ruffner fired a no-hitter lead Shepherd University pace Shepherd University to a first-game victory of a PSAC East doubleheader on Tuesday for split with Kutztown.  

Ruffner was dominant in the seven-inning gem with no walks and 14 strikeouts to move her record to 8-7.  

Shepherd (15-17, 10-10) got all the runs it needed in needed in the sixth inning when infielder Jordan Gugliuzza led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by outfielder Lexi McAllister before infielder Hailey Putnam reached on an error to load the bases. 

Boonsboro graduate Haylee Hartman drove in both runs double and Ruffner did the rest. 

The Rams took a 1-0 in the nightcap, scoring in the first catcher Madelyn Chambers walked and eventually scored when first baseman Brenna Collis reached on an error. 

Kutztown tied the game in the bottom of the first on a solo homer by Emily Henn. 

The Golden Bears with seven runs in the second, highlighted by Alexa Stevens’ two-run triple and Taylor Gearhart’s two-run single. 

  MEN’S COLLEGE GOLF 

Shepherd is 10th at halfway point of Cecil C. Spadafora Invitational 

INDIANA, Pa. – Campbell Koegler fired a 75 to lead Shepherd University in first-round action at the Cecil C. Spadafora Invitational at Indiana Country Club on Tuesday.  

Koegler is in 20th place individually while the Rams are in 10th place in a 13-team field with a total of 314. 

Koegler is followed by South Hagerstown graduate Joey Leisinger (78, T-43rd), Trey Rios (80, T-56th), Killian Donnelly (81, T-62nd) and Boonsboro graduate Morgan Dehoff ( (85, 73rd). 

The Rams return to action on Wednesday for final-round action.
