Leaf Peepers’ Delight: Fall Foliage in South Central Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland

Fall foliage season is in full swing in South Central Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland, and this week is expected to be the peak for color. The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) says that the leaves are changing color at different elevations, so there’s something to see for everyone.

“Pennsylvania has a longer and more varied fall foliage season than any other state in the nation, or anywhere in the world. This is because Pennsylvania has a diverse range of tree species, and the state’s climate is ideal for fall foliage production”, according to the DCNR.

“Foresters in Buchanan State Forest (serving Bedford, Fulton, Franklin counties) reported peak color for the district. Maples and hickories are displaying cheery red, yellows, and golds.”

“Forestry staff in Michaux State Forest (Cumberland, Franklin, Adams counties) indicated best color in the area, with all species showing color, including oaks transitioning to red and orange. Suggested places to visit for great fall shades include Dark Hollow Vista and Buzzard’s Rocks (drivable), Pole Steeple Trail and Vista, Sunset Rocks Trail, and Beaver Trail.”

Whether a seasoned leaf peeper or a first-timer, be sure to take a moment to appreciate the beauty of autumn in this region. From the fiery reds and oranges of maples to the golden yellows of oaks, the changing leaves offer a feast for the senses.
