Late Bloom: Autumn hues rebound

Foresters in Bedford, Fulton and Franklin counties declared the week of Oct. 23-29 the prime time to catch Pennsylvania’s fall colors in Buchanan State Forest, where drought-stressed trees staged a surprising comeback with vibrant displays.

Despite an early leaf drop from summer drought, the foliage has advanced steadily across the district, state forest staff reported. Many species rebounded with striking hues, catching rangers off guard. Maples, hickories, birches and sassafras largely cling to their leaves, while oaks edge toward their full autumn glory.

Buchanan State Forest spans more than 90,000 acres, offering ample ways to soak in the scenery. Hikers can tackle over 200 miles of multi-use trails, including segments of the Mid-State Trail and Tuscarora Trail. The forest also encircles much of the abandoned turnpike, now the TOPP Trail, in Bedford and Fulton counties. Other pursuits include sightseeing, picnicking, camping, mountain biking and hunting.

Near the forest’s headquarters, visitors can stroll the 0.4-mile Fitness Trail, an ADA-accessible loop, or the 0.8-mile Chad Strait Trail, which meanders through wooded hills. Bedford County’s palette bursts with reds from sugar and red maples, golden hickories and the varied tones of oaks.

Red maples hit peak vibrancy along Blankley Road, foresters said. For standout views, they recommend a drive to the Chaneysville Division, home to some of the county’s finest foliage. “Come enjoy the fall color to the fullest while it lasts,” staff urged.

Southward in the Cumberland-Franklin district, Michaux State Forest’s colors faded faster after wind and rain clipped the season in spots. Some areas may have crested last week, with the show “going fast,” according to the service forester. Lingering highlights include hickories and birches in pretty shades, plus stubborn oaks and sassafras. The best displays have migrated south; foresters suggest a scenic drive on state forest roads or a picnic at Old Forge.

The insights come entirely from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
