Investigation leads to arrests in infant abuse case

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — Two adults have been arrested following an investigation into serious injuries sustained by a 3-month-old infant, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded July 8 to Meritus Medical Center after hospital staff alerted authorities to injuries believed to be consistent with abusive head trauma. The infant was later transferred to Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., where medical professionals diagnosed a subdural hemorrhage along with extensive retinal hemorrhaging.

Investigators allege that Dante Nova, 23, was responsible for inflicting the injuries. Authorities further claim that Isabel Nova, 21, was aware of the situation and took steps to conceal what had occurred.

Dante Nova faces multiple charges, including first-degree child abuse resulting in severe physical injury, second-degree child abuse by a custodian, first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and neglect of a minor.

Isabel Nova has been charged with child neglect, reckless endangerment and several counts related to accessory after the fact, including allegations tied to child abuse and assault.

Both individuals are being held without bond at the Washington County Detention Center.

The investigation remains ongoing.
