FAYETTEVILLE – Totem Pole Playhouse is set to deliver a whirlwind of laughter and intrigue as “The 39 Steps” opens for a limited 12-performance run from July 12 through July 21. The fast-paced adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic thriller transforms high-stakes espionage into a comedic spectacle, with just four actors portraying more than one hundred characters.
Adapted by Patrick Barlow from John Buchan’s novel and Hitchcock’s classic 1935 film, “The 39 Steps” has earned two Tony and Drama Desk Awards and captivated audiences in London’s West End and on Broadway. This summer, the production marks a highlight of Totem Pole’s 75th anniversary season.
The cast includes Damon Bonetti as Richard Hannay, Mallory Hawks in multiple roles, Nicholas Wilder as Clown 1, and J.B. McLendon as Clown 2. The show is directed by Clayton Phillips, whose Broadway and national tour credits bring a seasoned touch to the production.
Producing Artistic Director Ryan B. Gibbs emphasized the show’s unique blend of suspense and comedy. “This is the kind of joyful, high-skill theatre that reminds us what makes Totem Pole magical,” Gibbs said. “If you liked our productions of Baskerville or Clue: On Stage—or if you’re a fan of Only Murders in the Building or the Knives Out movies—this show is absolutely for you.”
Gibbs added, “With its blend of classic Hitchcock suspense and Monty Python-style silliness, The 39 Steps is the perfect mid-summer escape.”
He also noted the show’s connection to the theater’s legacy. “This show captures the spirit of Totem Pole’s roots—bold storytelling, timeless humor, and an unforgettable night at the theatre.”
The production features twenty-two local staff, creative team members, and crew, continuing Totem Pole’s tradition of highlighting regional talent. The show is sponsored by F&M Trust.
Tickets are available through the Totem Pole Playhouse box office.
