CLEAR SPRING – A 500-acre family-owned farm in continuous operation since 1817 has been named Washington County’s Farm of the Year for 2025-2026 by the county Department of Business and Economic Development.
Located in Clear Spring, Crown Stone Farm is co-owned and operated by John and Pam Schnebly, along with J.C. and Beth Schnebly. The multi-generational Schnebly family owns 300 acres and rents an additional 200 acres that comprise the farm.
Crown Stone Farm is a historic dairy operation, among the oldest continuously operating dairy farms in Washington County. The farm is named after the Mason-Dixon five-mile marker, known as a crown stone, which still stands on the property today.
The Farm of the Year program recognizes a Washington County farm that exemplifies excellence in agriculture and fosters a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by today’s farmers. Key metrics for recognition include production, conservation, preservation, community involvement and dedication to farming and agriculture.
The Schnebly family manages approximately 450 head of cattle, including 200 milk cows that collectively produce more than 80,000 pounds of milk each week.

To support their operation, the family grows their own corn, soybeans and grains to create a total mixed ration of feed blend, ensuring optimal nutrition, herd health and productivity. They also produce hay and straw, which further supports the farm’s high level of self-sufficiency and quality control.
The farm also incorporates sustainable farming practices, such as cover crop programs that improve soil health, reduce erosion and preserve farmland for future generations.
The Schnebleys are also engaged in agricultural education and outreach, hosting school groups, community organizations and farming associations for tours and learning opportunities. A highlight includes welcoming over 300 guests from across the U.S. and abroad during a National Guernsey Association tour.
As part of the award recognition, Crown Stone Farm will receive a Farm of the Year plaque for on-farm display, a proclamation from the county commissioners, an on-farm photoshoot, a set of custom Farm of the Year Carhartt jackets and will be prominently featured in the latest agricultural marketing campaign led by the county’s Department of Business and Economic Development.
Crown Stone Farm is also featured in the county’s Faces of Farming video. Readers may watch it here.
