Rileigh Romberger, a sophomore at Smithsburg, can now call herself a state champion.
Match by match, she earned that distinction with a dominating performance at last weekend’s Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association Girls Wrestling Championships. Romberger went 4-0 at 120 pounds, winning every match by bonus. She capped off the championship run by winning a 14-2 major decision over Tuscarora’s Ella McDonald in the state title bout.
Romberger was the only area wrestler to medal at state tournaments in Maryland and Pennsylvania last weekend. Chambersburg’s Ashton Romberger went 2-2 at 139 pounds at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association 3A Championships.
Two area basketball teams — the Chambersburg boys and Smithsburg girls — are still alive in their respective postseason tournaments. The Trojans marched to the second round of the PIAA Class 6A Championships with a 52-38 win over Whitehall, while Smithsburg surged to the MPSSAA 1A State Semifinals with a 72-34 victory over Perryville.
North Hagerstown’s boys basketball team won the region final last week, 68-54 over Linganore, before its season ended with a 64-50 loss to Baltimore City College in the MPSSAA 3A State Quarterfinals.
