It took until the middle of June thanks to a deep state playoff run from the Greencastle-Antrim softball team, but the high school spring season has finally drawn to a close.
Competing in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 5A Tournament, the Blue Devils exploded for a 13-0 win over West Chester East in Monday’s semifinal round, before their season ended on Friday with a 2-0 loss to Penn-Trafford in the state championship game.
Greencastle’s offense fired on all cylinders in the win over the Vikings. The Blue Devils pounded out 17 hits, including base knocks from Caroline Logsdon (3 for 3), Kindal Rice (3 for 4), Bailey Leckron (2 for 2), Meadow Gambacurta (2 for 3), Kylie Kerns (2 for 3), Paityn Gordon (2 for 3), Kaidyn Zimmerman (1 for 3), Ericka Hoover (1 for 3), Aliyah Masser (1 for 2). Kerns slugged a double and a home run, while Hoover, Rice, and Zimmerman also went deep for homers.
It was more than enough support for sophomore starting pitcher Kiersten Swain, who fired a two-hit shutout and struck out 10 batters.
Four days later, the Blue Devils finally met their match in Penn-Trafford. The game remained scoreless until the top of the seventh inning, when the Warriors scratched two runs across the plate. Greencastle managed three hits in the loss, which were provided by Zhen Reuter, Zimmerman, and Hoover. Swain worked five innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out two batters.
