Following a sharp performance at the Washington County Public Schools Championship, don’t be surprised if you see the Smithsburg Leopards golf squad walking with a pep in their step this week.
Competing at Black Rock Golf Course, Smithsburg collectively shot a 336 to win the team title over Boonsboro (340) and Williamsport (345). The Leopards were spearheaded by the efforts of Ben Kirchner, who fired a 77 to win the individual tournament, and Ty Cobb, who posted a 79 for second place. Rounding out Smithsburg’s scorers were Sam Peters (85) and Chase Sinsebox (95).
The Leopards didn’t just shine on the golf course last week. Smithsburg’s boys cross country team — led by Grayson Wynkoop (2nd in 16:05.6) and Dylan Herbst (3rd in 16:18.0) — conquered the Small School race at the Interstate Classic, held at Clear Spring. North Hagerstown captured the girls Large School title and was highlighted by the running of Mackenzie Philp (1st in 17:57.2), Caroline Philp (3rd in 18:28.3), and Anna Ramanan (4th in 19:56.1).
Staying on the cross country theme, Chambersburg’s girls seized the team championship at the PTXC Meet at Kutztown University. Natalie Quinn (3rd in 20:00.5), Lillian Spohn (8th in 21:08.94), and Arrabella Rife (10th in 21:53.67) all posted top-10 finishes. The Chambersburg boys got a fifth-place finish in 17:25.58 from Boston Vincenti.
On the volleyball court, Chambersburg should be full of confidence for league play after starting its season with two wins, including a 3-0 sweep over Franklin County power Greencastle-Antrim. Another Trojans team, the girls tennis squad, suffered its first loss of the season but still reside at the top of the Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division with a 3-1 record.
In field hockey, Waynesboro, Greencastle-Antrim, and Fairfield all picked up their first wins of the season, while North Hagerstown kicked off the girls flag football campaign with a 20-6 win over South Hagerstown.
