Believe it or not, the track and field postseason is already upon us.
In Maryland last week, the CMC Small School and Big School Championships were held, and several area athletes showed they’re ready for every challenge that comes over the next few weeks.
Smithsburg’s girls captured the Small School team title and was led by Cora Gentzel, who nailed down wins in the 1,600 (5:20.88) and 3,200 (11:47.80). Jenna Howe (200, 25.72) and Kayla Hawbecker (800, 2:22.71) also won championships. As for the Smithsburg boys, the Leopards got runner-up finishes from Tyler Younker (800, 2:00.22), Michael Wynkoop (1,600, 4:36.01), and Rittenhouse Shuster (triple jump, 41-5).
At the Big School girls meet, North Hagerstown’s Lauren Stine stole the show with wins in the 800 (2:19.99) and 1,600 (5:05.60). On the boys side, the Hubs got victories from Walker Mason (800, 2:03.38) and Garrett Forrest (discus, 135-3).
The track postseason is only just beginning, as the Mid-Penn Conference Championships are set to be held at Chambersburg this weekend.
Baseball is wrapping up its regular season and one area squad, Waynesboro, is battling to earn a spot in the playoffs. The Tribe went 2-0 last week to move up to No. 16 in the District 3-6A power rankings. Waynesboro will need to keep winning, as only 14 squads qualify for districts.
Qualifying for the postseason won’t be an issue for Greencastle-Antrim’s softball squad, ranked No. 1 in District 3-5A. The Blue Devils went undefeated last week to extend their winning streak to eight games.
Finally, on the tennis courts, South Hagerstown finished as the top girls team in Washington County with a 13-3 record.
Below is a sport-by-sport look at how teams in the Local.News1 coverage area performed last week:
