CUMBERLAND COUNTY – Fire crews are making significant progress in battling two wildfires burning in Michaux State Forest, with containment levels improving and all evacuated residents cleared to return home as of Wednesday evening.
The Thompson Hollow Fire, the larger of the two blazes, has burned 2,248 acres and is now 80 percent contained. The Hammonds Rocks Fire, which scorched 470 acres, has reached 100 percent containment. No personal property damage or physical injuries have been reported in connection with either fire.
Firefighters have worked for more than a week to contain the flames, facing challenging weather conditions that included rain, wind and fluctuating temperatures. Crews continue to patrol the area, secure fire perimeters and address hazardous trees to prevent flare-ups. While smoke remains visible from the interior of the burned areas, officials say the fires are not spreading beyond their current boundaries.
All residents who were previously evacuated have now been allowed to return to their homes. Authorities provided specific instructions to ensure a safe return for those affected. However, Thompson Hollow Road remains closed from Shippensburg Road to Whitmer Road, and Three Turn Road is closed from Thompson Hollow Road to Ridge Road to support ongoing firefighting operations and public safety.
The public is urged to stay away from burned and charred areas of the forest. Outdoor burning activities are strongly discouraged as fire danger remains high in the region.
The Buchanan Valley Volunteer Fire Department, which played a key role in the firefighting response, has launched a special 50/50 fundraiser to help replenish supplies and replace damaged equipment. Tickets are $5 each and are available exclusively through the department’s online store. The drawing will be held Wednesday, May 7, at 7 p.m. Bonus tickets are offered for bulk purchases, with details provided at the time of the drawing.
The cause of both fires remains under investigation. Officials continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as containment efforts advance.
