GREENCASTLE– Trivia night is quickly becoming one of the most popular afte-the-workday activities in the country. Everything from sports, movies, music and history have become the subject matter for these brain teasing extravaganzas. On Friday night, Oct. 9, a local trivia company called Deaf Row Trivia added a little holiday spirit to their game night: it was going to be all about Halloween.
However, it wasn’t just going to be another night of trivia tricks and treats; this game was going to be played 82 feet beneath the surface in the “cathedral” of the Black Coffey Caverns in Greencastle.
Deaf Row Trivia owners Dustin Woodring and Jess Bream decorated the caves to offer the perfect setting for the creepiest game in town. Skeletons, witches and pumpkins adorned the crevices of the caverns to help lead the way to the large opening where tables and chairs had been set up with some tasty treats and Halloween gadgets that awaited the teams.
Dustin, Jess, and their small crew spent several hours decorating the caverns, a place that Dustin knows well. He works part time as a tour guide for the Black Coffey Caverns, and he knows the tunnels inside and out. Halloween-themed music was being played through a speaker beacon, and battery-operated lights had been placed all around the room. It was a clever set-up.
This was the second year for the Halloween-themed game from Deaf Row, but the first one played in the cavern setting. There were 10 teams playing that night with around 30 people of all ages. The games consisted of three rounds with five questions each round. The questions, of course, were all Halloween- and horror-themed, covering things like history, horror films and games, music and even tested the candy knowledge of the participants. The players got into the spirit of things as well by creating themed names like “Franken-einsteins.” Clever!
The categories that night were fun as well, and they were the brainchild of Jess Bream, who handled the research for the trivia questions and came up with the nifty names, names like “White House Frights,” “Literary Legends of the Dark,” “Corporate Creepshow” and “Graveyard Grooves.”
The event was sponsored by Khaotic Sweetz, a local pastry shop that also provided tasty sample cookies for the teams. I tried a few, and they were delicious. The event ran for about two hours, and a good time was had by all.
