HAGERSTOWN – Washington County officials will break ground this spring on a multimillion-dollar expansion of the terminal at Hagerstown Regional Airport, a project aimed at modernizing the facility, improving accessibility and preparing the airport for future airline service.
The Terminal Expansion Program will add 4,800 square feet to the east side of the airport’s existing 23,910-square-foot terminal, increasing passenger capacity and upgrading aging infrastructure inside the building.
County officials say the project is designed to enhance the passenger experience while positioning the airport for continued growth in regional travel.
Project supported by multiple funding partners
The expansion carries a total project cost of $5.1 million, with funding coming from federal, state and local sources.
According to project materials, funding includes:
- $4.3 million from the Federal Aviation Administration
- $472,000 from the Maryland Aviation Administration
- $344,000 from Washington County.
County officials say the investment reflects a coordinated effort to strengthen transportation infrastructure in Western Maryland.
Improvements designed to enhance passenger experience
Airport leaders say the project is intended to improve both functionality and accessibility within the terminal.
Planned improvements include:
- Expanded ticketing areas
- Additional gate-side seating
- Updated terminal architecture designed to accommodate increased passenger traffic
- Full Americans with Disabilities Act compliance and expanded accessibility features.
Officials say the improvements will also make the airport more attractive to additional airline service by expanding counter and gate capacity.
The project is expected to support the region’s economic development while improving travel options for residents in areas that are often underserved by larger airports.
Economic and workforce benefits
County officials say the construction project will provide an economic boost through short-term construction jobs.
The project team includes Washington County and Hagerstown Regional Airport along with several contractors and design partners involved in the development and construction process.
Officials say expanding the terminal is part of a broader strategy to strengthen transportation connectivity and improve access for businesses and travelers in the region.
Ceremony scheduled for April
Washington County and airport officials will formally mark the start of construction during a Terminal Expansion Program groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for:
April 7, 2026, at 12:30 p.m.
Hagerstown Regional Airport – Main Terminal
18434 Showalter Road, Hagerstown.
The event is invitation-only, and officials have said that the ceremony will mark the start of an exciting project.
